Wedding Invitation Assembly Guide

The proper assembly of wedding invitations is one of the bride's most common questions. Follow these easy steps for success:

Assembling the invitation:

  • Place a piece of tissue paper over the printed wording.
  • Place the reception card on top of the tissue paper with the printed side face up.
  • Any other insertions, such as a map or directions, should go in last, on top of the reception card, printed side face up.
Inserting the assembled invitations into the envelope:

  • The assembled invitation, with all the enclosure cards properly inserted, is then placed into the inner envelope. If your invitation is folded, the folded edge goes into the inner envelope first so that the printed wording is facing the back of the envelope. If your invitation is non-folding, place in envelope so that the wording is placed so that the printed wording is facing the back of the envelope.
  • The inner envelope is placed into the outer envelope, with the front of the inner envelope facing the back of the outer envelope.
  • Your wedding invitations are now complete and ready to be sealed.
A few final tips:

  • If the printed wording is on the inside of a single fold invitation, the enclosure cards should be placed inside.
  • If your invitation is non-folding, or is folded once with the printed wording on the front, the enclosure cards ae placed in front of the invitation.
  • If your invitation is a trifold, french fold or accordion (or "Z") fold, the enclosure cards are placed inside the second fold.
  • Address the outer envelope and the response envelope by hand. Use calligraphy if possible.
  • Choose an attractive postage stamp that will complement the overall look of your invitations.
  • Mail your invitations at least six to eight weeks in advance of your wedding so your guests have sufficient time to make plans to attend.
  • If you bring your invitations to the post office, you can request that they be hand cancelled. This will minimize any unsightly marks or damage caused by machine cancelling.
